요약정보
President Lee Myung-bak tapped Kwon Jae-jin‚ a senior presidential secretary for civil affairs‚ as his new Minister of Justice Friday afternoon despite strong protest over the appointment of a close associate.
The Presidential Office stated that Kwon‚ a 58-year old prosecutor-turned-presidential aide‚ was fit to take the post as it highly acknowledged his contribution to establishing a fair society under the Lee administration.
Kwon's analytical skills and policy judgment‚. backed by his 26 years of experience in the field of prosecution were also taken into account.
The announcement came amid growing protests from opposition parties and some ruling party lawmakers over Lee's appointment of a close presidential aide as justice minister.
Many raised questions over a fair legal system ahead of next year's general and presidential elections.
They also voiced concerns over Kwon's alleged involvement in a corruption scandal related to a savings bank and the Prime Minister's Office-led illegal surveillance of civilians.
President Lee also appointed Han Sang-dae‚ chief of the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office as his new prosecutor general.
Han was considered for his diverse experience in the field‚ fluency in English and his profound knowledge of international law.
Han is to replace Kim Joon-kyu who offered to resign last week‚ while Lee was on his 10-day African tour in protest over a bill that gives more authority to police in criminal investigations.

And President Lee is expected to take some time before naming Kwon's successor as chief presidential aide on civil affairs.
