요약정보
The Korean government announced Tuesday that it had reached an agreement with Canada on resuming Canadian beef imports soon.
Seoul's Ministry for Food‚ Agriculture‚ Forestry and Fisheries stresses‚ however‚ that Korea will only import Canadian beef from animals under 30 months of age.
Cattle's brains‚ eyes‚ spinal cords‚ and other internal organs that are categorized as the parts that pose the highest transfer risk of mad cow disease to humans will not be imported.
Some mechanically processed meat will also be prohibited due to the possibility of it containing risk materials.
The Korean government will also dispatch inspection teams to Canadian packing houses.
The Korean government says it does not expect the resumption of Canadian beef imports to affect the domestic meat market that much as Canadian beef only accounted for around 4 percent of Korea's beef imports in 2002.
Still‚ many Korean farms worry about the possible negative impact by the imports and the government is preparing measures to meet those worries.
"What is most worrisome is when import beef products are falsely sold as Korean beef.
We plan to strengthen the supervision system with the introduction of mandatory country of origin labels."
Korea suspended Canadian beef imports back in 2003 when the country confirmed its first case of mad cow disease in Alberta.
In 2007‚ Canada earned the status of a controlled risk country from the World Organization for Animal Health‚ but Korea maintained its import ban on Canada.
Korea resumed US beef imports in June 2008‚ which shares the same status as Canada regarding the bovine disease‚ leading Canada to file a complaint against Korea's beef ban at the Dispute Settlement Body of the World Trade Organization.
However‚ thanks to this agreement‚ Canada now plans to suspend the on-going WTO case against Korea.
Canadian beef imports to Korea could resume by the end of this year after Korea completes domestic procedures‚ such as gaining legislative approval.
