요약정보
President Lee Myung-bak sat down with main opposition Democratic Party leader Sohn Hak-kyu on Monday morning at the Presidential Office of Cheong Wa Dae.
During the two-hour breakfast meeting the two sides focused their discussion on six agenda items: college tuition‚ job creation‚ household debt‚ the corruption scandal involving savings banks‚ the supplementary budget‚ and Korea's pending free trade agreement with the United States.
A joint statement summing up the session stated that the two sides did reach an agreement on a number of outstanding issues.
They agreed to collaborate in narrowing the gap between regular and temporary workers‚ closely cooperate in investigating the recent corruption scandal involving savings banks while drawing up a package of measures to curb household debt.
[Interview : Kim Du-woo‚ Presidential Senior Secretary for Public Relations] "The government will announce comprehensive measures on curbing household debt as soon as possible. They will include maintaining the size of the debt at an appropriate level and reducing the burden on households."
In respect to the controversial issue of college tuition‚ President Lee and Sohn agreed on the need to lower college tuition fees and that the policy be pushed forward along with a restructuring of the country's universities and colleges.
They‚ however‚ failed to accept each other's specific measures to cut tuition fees‚ leaving it to further discussions via political channels between the two sides to reach a compromise.
As for the talks on the Korea-US FTA‚ the two sides again failed to reach a breakthrough despite President Lee's call for the Democratic Party's consent at the National Assembly as the opposition leader demanded a renegotiation of the trade pact.
Asked whether there could be similar sessions in the future‚ the Presidential Office said the Korean leader is always open to dialogue with political leaders from any party.
