The parade was a recreation of the moving of the Tripitaka Koreana 600 years ago from Seonwon[선원] Temple on Ganghwa Island to Haein[해인] Temple‚ 300 kilometers away. The huge event was part of the celebrations for the millennial anniversary of the Tripitaka Koreana.
A museum in Gangnam‚ Seoul is having a very special exhibition.
The print version of the Chojo Daejanggyeong[초조대장경]‚ the first Tripitaka‚ is on display.

] "The "Chojo Daejanggyeong" was created over 77 years beginning in 1011‚ during the Goryeo Dynasty. That was the first production of what would become the Tripitaka Koreana. It is where the Tripitaka Koreana began."

The Daejanggyeong‚ or Tripitaka‚ is a complete collection of Buddhist scripture. The Goryeo Dynasty‚ which revered Buddhism‚ commissioned the first Chojo Daejanggyeong in 1011‚ and the revised Tripitaka Koreana in 1236.

] "We have displayed the Chojo Daejanggyeong alongside the Tripitaka Koreana so that visitors can compare them. The Chojo Daejanggyeong is superior in terms of calligraphy or engraving techniques‚ but the Tripitaka Koreana's content is the most accurate in the world because the characters underwent a complete edit."
The Chojo Daejanggyeong was created a thousand years ago with the wish to save the nation‚ suffering from attacks by the Khitans‚ with the power of faith in Buddha. It was painstakingly completed over seventy-seven years.

] "Because it was such an early project‚ because it was such a large-scale project‚ because it was so intensively used‚ because these days you still have hundreds‚ literally hundreds of copies of the first Tripitaka remaining‚ I think these aspects make it an important event in world history."
But the Chojo Daejanggyeong‚ engraved onto wooden blocks‚ was burned and destroyed in 1232 during an attack by the Mongols.
In 1236‚ the Goryeo Dynasty commissioned a second Tripitaka‚ the Tripitaka Koreana‚ in hopes of protecting the nation from the Mongols. The Tripitaka Koreana came to be called by some Koreans as the "Palman Daejanggyeong‚[팔만대장경]" literally meaning "Eighty-thousand Tripitaka‚" because of the number of plates produced. This is the oldest Tripitaka in existence today‚ and a part of UNESCO's Memory of the World.

The Research Institute of Tripitaka Koreana] "Records show that the process of writing out the Tripitaka on paper‚ engraving it on wood‚ editing the engravings‚ and printing them on paper required the work of 50‚000 people a year. The academic prestige of the Buddhist monks and scholars who participated in the project was immeasurable."
The Tripitaka Koreana is coming alive again in the hearts and minds of Koreans through various cultural events celebrating its millenium of history. Special hands-on events were also prepared at the Seoul International Book Fair 2011.
