요약정보
In the wake of Japan's nuclear crisis‚ the general public has recently become more aware of the risks with nuclear energy.
And as international society is now more focused on developing and using renewable energy‚ the annual International Green Energy Expo opened in Daegu‚ North Gyeongsang Province.
[Interview : Park Chong-man‚ President & CEO
Daegu Exhibition & Convention Center] "This is currently the biggest green energy exhibition held in Korea‚ and about the 30th in the world. We aim to be the 10th largest exhibition in five years."
And officials aim to expand their energy-related conferences into an international program in the future.
A fast-growing technology called photovoltaics‚ or PV‚ took up a large part of this year's event‚ which is the biggest so far with 400 companies from 23 countries participating and an expected 40-thousand visitors.
"Solar panels are made from photovoltaic cells consisting of semiconductors‚ which generate electricity from sunlight."

These simple panels can be used easily in homes and because there are no moving parts‚ the process is silent.
[Interview : Mike Riordan‚ Head of Baccini Business Unit
Applied Materials Inc.] "So Applied Materials‚ we're here at the green energy summit to promote our crystalline solar products we moved into solar in 2007‚ and now we are a leading supplier of the equipment for the solar business."
The exhibition hall is also specially structured to make sure power is used efficiently.
Sunlight enters through the holes in the ceiling‚ lighting up the entire place without electricity‚ while the building's water is recycled.
[Interview : Douglas R. Gress‚ Associate Professor
Seoul National University] "I'm researching the connections that companies have both with suppliers and buyers and with the government. I'm really interested in the development of new technologies‚ which is going to be very important as Korea tries to place itself in the global market."
Other technologies‚ including wind and geothermal powers‚ were also introduced at the event‚ showing potential for the clean energy industry.
However‚ the world is still highly dependent on fossil fuels‚ so both national and local policies are needed for people to be involved in the shift towards using these energies.
