For the general public‚ Arbor Day is a yearly event. However‚ for Director Lee‚ every day is Arbor Day.
Early April still holds some vestiges of winter. The garden is full of flowers that haven't fully bloomed yet. For Director Lee‚ this is the most exciting time of the year as he watches flowers slowly beginning to bloom.

Hantaek Botanical Garden] "Most plants shed their leaves in November‚ and grass-like plants die off at that time. Every spring‚ I wonder whether the plants will grow well after the cold winter. Then I start looking around‚ and I can see that they have begun sprouting new leaves. I realize that they have gone through the winter season well. That's why I am the most excited during springtime."
He begins his day with a roundabout walk of the botanical garden. Greeting flowers‚ plants and trees is something he never forgets to do.

Hantaek Botanical Garden] "I always wake up at 5 AM. I have breakfast at 6 AM and arrive at the botanical garden at 6:40. I don't have time to exercise‚ so I walk around in the morning. This daily routine has kept me healthy. I don't have any other way of exercising."
Each plant has its own color and fragrance. The botanical garden is also home to rare species. Currently‚ it houses some 2‚400 species found within Korea and 6‚600 species brought from overseas‚ bringing the grand total to roughly 9‚000 species.

Hantaek Botanical Garden] "This is a baobab tree‚ which can be seen in Australia. Because it looks like a bottle‚ it is also sometimes called a bottle tree."
This is a very important plant. The Wollemia nobilis was thought to be extinct for millions of years and was only seen through fossils. However‚ it was recently discovered as a living plant.
The 660‚000-square-meter Hantaek Botanical Garden is divided into two sections‚ the East Garden and the West Garden. The East Garden is open to the public‚ while the West Garden is home to growing saplings and rare plant species.

If I include preparation time‚ then I've been running the garden for 34 years. I invested a great amount of money‚ but I gained no profit in return.
