요약정보
Despite the spring-like temperatures recently‚ record-low temperatures during the winter wreaked damage on flowers and trees in the country and have left prices‚ even now‚ much higher than usual.
But‚ that doesn't seem to be a problem for plant lovers.
[Reporter : Han Da-eun
daeun@arirang.co.kr ] "Just one day ahead of Korea's Arbor Day‚ tens of people are bustling here at Yangjae Flower Market Center‚ Korea's largest floral retail zone‚ to pickup some trees."
Korea has designated April 5th as Arbor Day in efforts to encourage people to plant and care for trees as well as to shed light on the importance of preserving nature.
And to celebrate the nation's 66th Arbor Day plant enthusiasts packed Yangjae market in Seoul to pick out shrubs and trees to take back to their home.
[Interview : Lee Chul-min‚ Representative director
Kukjae Horticultureseeds Co.‚ Ltd.] "A lot of trees have fallen victim to the harsh winter‚ so the prices are higher compared to previous years. But with Arbor Day coming up‚ the number of customers has risen sharply over the past few days."
[Interview : Kang Seok-nyung‚ Customer ] "Arbor Day is just around the corner‚ so I came to look around. I'm particularly interested in plum blossom trees and persimmon trees."
Each buyer has his or her own way of selecting trees depending on their type‚ but experts say that there's a general set of rules to remember.
[Interview : Lee Tae-soo‚ Team manager
Kukjae Horticultureseeds Co.‚ Ltd.] "In order to pick a good tree‚ you need to first look at its roots. The more rootlets it has‚ the healthier it is. The shiny texture of the trunk is also important."
Meanwhile‚ the Korea Forest Service announced that it will plant more than 1.6 million trees across the country on Tuesday to celebrate the environment-conscious day as well as Korea's hosting of the 10th session of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification in October.
