To mark the nation's 66th Arbor Day on Tuesday‚ April 5th and the 7th anniversary of KTX‚ Korea's high-speed rail network‚ the Korea Railroad Corporation‚ or KORAIL‚ held a special environmental event dubbed "GLORY" on Monday.

KORAIL] "GLORY stands for the Green Life of Railway Yearning. It is a campaign that encourages people to use environmentally-friendly trains more frequently."
Traveling by train is known to emit much less greenhouse gas than that of a single automobile.
Going from Seoul to Busan by train‚ about 11 kilograms of CO2 is emitted as opposed to 66 kilograms when traveling by car.
For example‚ a fully-grown pine tree is known to absorb about five kilograms of CO2 annually.
Thus‚ if people choose to take the train instead of traveling by car‚ it cuts the amount of carbon dioxide by 55 kilograms‚ an amount which would take 11 pine trees to offset.
That is why the GLORY campaign is promoting more train-riding‚ as it is proven to be much better for the environment.
[Reporter : Robert Holley‚ Honorary KORAIL ambassador] "That is why we're doing this little campaign today because of the fact that railways‚ trains‚ are much more environmentally friendly. So if you're environmentally conscious‚ you should ride the train."

yjkim@arirang.co.kr] "And as part of its campaign‚ staff and ambassadors for KORAIL are giving away seedlings of Korean red pine right here at Seoul Station.
By giving away the seedlings‚ used as a symbol of the train's relatively lower emission of green house gases‚ the campaign aims to promote the GLORY movement and encourage tree planting on Arbor Day."
[Reporter : Kim Tae-wan‚ Passenger] "I will plant the seedling in front of my school dormitory. I think it's great that a national corporation has launched this kind of campaign."
Moreover‚ to thank customers for using the KTX plaques of appreciation were awarded to seven individuals who have used the high-speed train the most over the last seven years.
They were honored to receive this award and hope that their example can lead to less air pollution and‚ ultimately‚ offset global warming.
