In the wake of the Fukushima nuclear power plant leakage‚ some airlines are opting to divert their Tokyo flights while others are continuing normal schedules.
The London arm of the Volcanic Ash Advisory Center‚ or VAAC‚ on Wednesday issued a formal "emergency" warning to flight crews‚ and highlighted the 30-kilometer exclusion zone around the stricken plant.
It advised caution when entering airspace in Japan‚ as well as parts of Russia‚ China‚ South Korea and Alaska.
But in response‚ the Korea Meteorological Administration made it clear this is not a radiation warning over the skies of the Korean peninsula.
It is merely an advisory to flights flying in the vicinity of Fukushima‚ and the KMA added it is hardly likely radiation will spread to Korea.
Still‚ the emergency warning triggered a flurry of phone calls to the Korea Institute of Nuclear Safety.
A number of concerned people asked how to prepare against a radiation threat if Korea is affected‚ prompting the institute to issue an action plan.
This guideline is similar to that of protection against the yellow dust phenomenon.
People are advised to refrain from going out‚ to use masks when doing so and to take a shower when coming back home.
Other advisories call for packing an umbrella or a rain coat and closing windows.
In case an evacuation alert is issued‚ the institute advised people to follow instructions from authorities and to shut off electricity and gas‚ as well as tap water.
The institute also set forth a table of radiation exposure and how it affects public health.
According to the institute the radiation exposure from a regular x-ray is 0.0-3 to point-0-5 millisieverts‚ a measure of the absorption of radiation by the human body.
The average person is exposed to a total of one millisievert in a year.
When this level reaches 8.7-6 per year‚ it constitutes a warning level and 8‚760 millisieverts are equivalent to an emergency.
When exposure reaches 1‚000 to 2‚000 millisieverts‚ people tend to have a headache and feel nausea.
As a preventive measure‚ people are advised to take iodoral pills when they are exposed to 100 milisieverts or more.
This prescription drug is deemed effective in warding off the accumulation of radiation in the body.
