요약정보
A week has passed since Japan was hit by a mega-earthquake and tsunami‚ but the nuclear crisis at the Fukushima power plant continues to worsen‚ forcing Japanese authorities to attempt various techniques to contain the situation.
And the Japanese government is coming forward with information that the situation has deteriorated despite many attempts to contain it.
We have our news reporter Kang Seok-ho on the phone to give us the updates.
Seok-ho‚ fill us in.
[Reporter : SEOKHO] Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan held a news conference Friday night and said that the situation at the Daiichi power plant remains "very grave."
Kan also said that the government is determined to overcome this crisis and asked for solidarity among Japanese citizens.
And in the evening‚ the authorities have raised the nuclear accident level from 4 to 5.
The scale‚ ranging from one-to-seven measures the seriousness of nuclear accidents‚ with 5 meaning at least several deaths resulting from radiation poisoning are expected and there is severe damage to the reactor cores.
The 1979 partial meltdown at the Three Mile Island nuclear plant in the US was at level five as well.
Also on Friday‚ a separate water tank that holds more than 6‚400 spent nuclear fuel rods has been found to have cooling system failures.
This tank holds more than all the spent fuel rods stocked in all six nuclear reactors in the Daiichi plant‚ and the government is preparing preemptive measures to handle this development.
And the plant operator TEPCO admitted they might further encase the troubled reactors in concrete as a last resort‚ similar to what was done in Chernobyl.
But one good news‚ the operator says that a 1-and-half-kilometer-long power cable is almost ready to be connected to the No. 1 and 2 reactors‚ which should resuscitate their cooling systems.
And we have received reports that now Japan is ready to receive assistance from the outside world with the nuclear crisis‚ could you give us more details[Reporter : SEOKHO] To contain the unfolding crisis‚ the Japanese government has now agreed to receive technical assistance from the US as well as high tech equipment.
The US Air Force is to provide a Global Hawk unmanned aerial vehicle to hover above the Daiichi plant and monitor the temperature inside the reactors as well as take photographs to assess the damage.
Also‚ an 8-meter-long snake-like robot equipped with a camera will be deployed to the site that can enter small cracks and move at a speed of 82 centimers per second.
And Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan met with the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency‚ Yukiya Amano‚ on Friday and vowed to provide more information to the entire world on the on-going situation.
The nuclear agency chief said that an IAEA team will be sent to the Daiichi plant to monitor the radiation level and one liaison officer will be stationed in Tokyo in the coming days.
The Korean government has sent a some-100 member Korean rescue team to Sendai to help with the resecue operation there.
Do we have any other responses from the Korean government so far[Reporter : SEOKHO] Amid countries around the world evacuating their people in Japan‚ Seoul has recommended that Koreans in Fukushima Prefecture stay out of the area within an 80-kilometer radius from the plant.
And in preparation for the worst case scenario‚ the government has laid out a detailed plan to evacuate its citizens from Japan.
[Interview : Min Dong-seok‚ 2nd Vice Minister
Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade] "If there is an emergency due to the unfolding nuclear crisis in Japan‚ the Korean government is preparing to use charter flights‚ coast guard and navy ships as well as military transport aircraft to evacuate our citizens residing in Japan. "
The Korean government also sent two-thirds of the rescue team operating in
