요약정보
On March 11‚ at 2:46 PM‚ Japan was struck by a massive earthquake.
The most severe earthquake in Japanese history hit in the ocean floors near Tohoku‚ Japan.
After the quake‚ a terrible tsunami was bound to hit the coastline.
All of Japan is in a state of emergency in the face of an unprecedented strong earthquake.
As of March 13th‚ a total of 380‚000 people have been evacuated from the Tohoku area. The number of casualties is expected to reach into the tens of thousands.
[Interview : Japanese citizen] "I once experienced a magnitude 5 earthquake. This was much worse. This was much more frightening."
[Interview : Foreigner residing in Japan] "It was terrifying. I've never felt a quake that strong. My Japanese coworkers haven't experienced anything like this either in their lifetime."
Residents living within a 20-km radius of a nuclear plant in Fukushima were also evacuated for fears of exposure to radiation.
The Japanese government is doing all that it can to contain this crisis by deploying its Japanese Self-Defense Forces‚ or JSDF‚ into the affected areas.
[Interview : Naoto Kan‚ Prime Minster of Japan] "The government will do its utmost to minimize the damages."
As soon as the earthquake receded‚ the seismic activity was first recorded as having a magnitude of 7.9. That figure was soon revised to 8.8‚ then changed again to 9.0 as of March 13th.
The Sichuan earthquake that took 70‚000 lives in 2008 had a magnitude of 8.0.
Compared to the magnitude 7.0 earthquake that killed 220‚000 people in Haiti in January of 2010‚ the earthquake that hit Japan is being calculated as far more devastating.
[Interview : Hong Tae-gyeong‚ Professor] "The earthquake that hit Japan basically had the effect of simultaneously dropping a million of the atomic bombs that hit Nagasaki in World War II. It is the strongest earthquake ever to have occurred in Japan."
Japan is still in the throes of aftershocks.
But even a more fearful disaster than the earthquake itself has hit Japan.
55 minutes after the Japanese government warned its citizens of a coming tsunami‚ a giant tsunami hit a 2100-km-long piece of the coastline near Tohoku.
The top speed of the tsunami as it hit the coast was 800 km/h‚ the rough equivalent of a jet plane. The waves were 10 meters high at their highest.
Buildings‚ ships‚ and cars were all swept along by the unstoppable wall of water.
The giant tsunami has engulfed entire areas of land. Where does this destructive force of nature get its power from[Interview : Yu Yong-gyu‚ Earthquake monitor
Korea Meteorological Administration] "When a big earthquake occurs in the ocean‚ the ocean floor sinks and the water all rushes at once‚ causing waves that grow into a tsunami as they approach the coastline."
"Tsunami" means "waves of harbors" in Japanese. It is currently the international term for tidal waves caused by earthquakes.
The reason that tsunamis become international problems is because the aftereffects spread to neighboring countries.
Currently‚ 50 nations in the Pacific area including Russia‚ the Philippines‚ Indonesia‚ Australia‚ the United States‚ and Chile are all considered to be in the scope of the tsunami's reach. The entire Pacific Ocean region is fearing the aftereffects of the earthquake‚ thus the tsunami is not simply a national problem.
In Santa Cruz‚ California‚ the arrival of a tsunami has already taken lives.
When a 9.5 earthquake hit Chile in 1960‚ the shock had carried across the Pacific Ocean in the form of a 25-meter tsunami that killed 140 people in Japan.
In December 2004‚ a tsunami that began on the Indonesian island of Sumatra caused damages in 12 nations in the Indian Ocean‚ killing 230‚000 people.
Thankfully‚ Korea is considered safe from the effects of th
