Welcome back.
In February of 2010 the Ministry of Justice opened the nation's first foreigner-only prison in response to the increasing number of foreign convicts here in Korea.
Located in Cheonan of South Chungcheong Province it is also first of its kind in the world.
The facility is specially equipped to accomodate over 5-hundred foreign inmates who are currently serving their sentences there.
And to tell us more Arirang Today's reporter Kim Hyo-sun joins us in the studio.
Hello Hyo-sun.
[Reporter : ] Hello guys.
It has been a year since the Cheonan Correctional Institution opened its doors with a new feature.
It used to be a Juvenile Correctional Service Center but has been refurbished into the nation's and the world's first foreigner-only prison.
Let's take a look at what's behind the barred doors.
At the mountainside outskirts of Cheonan‚ located in South Chungcheong Province about 55 miles south of Seoul is Korea's first foreigner-only prison.
In February of 2010 the Ministry of Justice opened the nation's and the world's first prison for foreign offenders.
With barred doors and surveillance cameras it might look like an ordinary prison on the outside but it's a different story behind the doors.
[Reporter : ] "As the Cheonan Correctional Institution houses some 500 inmates from 30 nations‚ it tries its best to mitigate their differences."
What used to be the Cheonan Juvenile Correctional Service was refurbished to accommodate foreign convicts whose number has been increasing steadily during the past years surpassing 23-thousand in 2009.
Despite the steady rise the foreign offenders were scattered at facilities throughout the country where they were a minority.
Accompanied by one of the officers we were able to get a closer look at the facility.
One of the most notable unique aspects is the sign along the corridor written in various languages.
Another aspect which cannot be seen at other prisons across the nation… is the International Affairs Division.
This division… consisted of some 20 staff members… helps the foreign inmates… from A to Z.
Recently… it hired ten multilingual staff members… to reduce the communication barrier between the foreign inmates and institution officers… who are all from Korea.
They say… communication problems were the biggest concern before these new officers were employed.
[Interview : ] "As the Cheonan Correctional Institution is for foreign prisoners‚ there are inmates from different nations. Therefore‚ we try to solve communication problems and other difficulties that the inmates have by talking to them directly. We also establish close ties with foreign embassies so that we can contact their offices or the inmates' family members in case of emergency."
[Interview : ] "I am in charge of Vietnamese. Currently‚ I take care of educating the inmates when they enter the facility on top of translation and interpretation duties."
The officers at this department say that they are most proud of translating the introductory booklet in seven languages… from Japanese to Spanish.
These booklets… which are handed out to the inmates upon entering the correctional institution… provide an overview of the facility and a little about Korean culture.
[Interview : ] "Knowing what language they use is most crucial. After that‚ we distribute the guide booklets accordingly."
And this prison has a rather unconventional approach of running the facility.
During their sentence… the inmates receive paid vocational training… and various cultural courses… that help them understand Korea better.
When the foreign inmates first arrive at the facility… they attend a mandatory orientation program… dubbed 'Good Morning Korea.'
The program introduces basic Korean language through nursery rhymes and folk songs.
[Interview : ] "We initiated the Good Morning Korea Program in February 2010 to increase the understanding of Korean culture among the foreign pris
