요약정보
The organization "Neoh-meoh-seoh" ‚ which translates into "beyond it" or "beyond obstacles" in English‚ received an award on Monday for its seven-year contribution to fighting for women's rights.
Neoh-meoh-seoh was recognized for its efforts in a special ceremony hosted by the Korean Women's Association United in celebration of International Women's Day which falls each year on March 8th.
A co-representative of the organization says the day and specifically the award means a great deal to her.
[Interview : Kim Seong-hee‚ Co-Representative
Beyond It] "I hope today's award will serve as a promise for women in the future to live in a gender-equal society."
Not being able to vote or quitting your job after becoming pregnant was par for the course for women in Korea back in the 1970s and 80s.
The social environment for Korean women has improved quite a bit over the past few decades‚ but some say there is still much more room for change.
[Interview : Kim Keum-ok‚ Co-Representative
Korean Women's Association United] "The environment for Korean women in the workplace is still very poor and organizations like ours will keep making efforts to improve women's rights."
Statistics Korea says more than half of the female working population was employed in 2006‚ with the number exceeding 10-million.
However‚ when compared by age the employment rate shows a significant drop when women reach their 30s suggesting that many are still not able to work and raise kids at the same time.
And in a report released by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development‚ Korea's female employment rate in 2009 ranked 28th among its 34 members countries.
[Reporter : Laah Hyun-kyung
jlaah@arirang.co.kr] Although the number of women working in specialized professions and managerial positions here in Korea is increasing‚ it seem like there may be a few more steps left until the social environment for Korean women becomes more agreeable.
