Sunday was an important day for Tibetan Buddhists living in various parts of India as it marked the Losar festival‚ or the Tibetan New Year. Hundreds of Tibetans gathered at their shrine located in Mecleod Ganj ‚ near India's northern state of Himachal Pradesh to celebrate the occasion for three days.
The celebration was escalated in religious fervor this year‚ being the first of its kind after a two year hiatus. The Tibetan government-in-exile had wished the people show solidarity for their countrymen by toning down the festivities due to the 2008 uprising in the country‚ that led to riots in the Tibetan capital‚ Lhasa.
Even foreigners and tourists joined the congregation to appreciate their efforts to preserve Tibetan culture even during exile.
Rice is a staple food for millions of people around the world‚ including in the Philippines. Thus climate change‚ which has been taking its toll on traditional crops globally‚ has hit local farmers with a diminishing crop yield.
Amidst all this‚ scientists at the International Rice Research Institute in the Philippines have developed rice varieties that can endure extreme weather conditions such as flooding‚ droughts‚ and high-salinity.
According to the institute‚ thanks to the increasing temperatures and rising sea levels‚ developing countries may face a 15 percent decrease in irrigated rice harvests‚ and a 12 percent increase in rice prices by 2050. This is where the modified rice grains‚ formulated from a bank of over a hundred thousand different types around the world‚ come into play.
For example‚ the new "super rice" can withstand being submerged underwater for two weeks. However‚ farmers claim this doesn't all guarantee a happy ending.They seek for their government to lower the costs of necessary items such as fertilizers and pesticides‚ which play a role in the escalating rice price.
The Royal Mint in Britain produced an official coin to celebrate the joyous occasion that's drawing attention worldwide: the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton.
The coin features a profile of the couple -- approved by William‚ Queen Elizabeth‚ and the government -- and will weigh in at five pounds or roughly 8.14 US dollars.
The coin‚ designed by Mark Richards who is a member of the Royal Society of British Sculptors‚ will become a legal tender on March 16th.
The Royal Mint expressed through their website their expectations for the coin's massive demand‚ as public interest in the upcoming prenuptials is huge and only growing by the day.
