요약정보
New Zealand's stringent construction codes and building safety measures have been well known globally for many years.
Its civil engineers have set standards for building guidelines that are commonly adopted by other quake-vulnerable countries such as Japan and the United States.
Regardless of the death toll in Christchurch‚ some experts say the city's stringent earthquake regulatory measures played a huge role preventing more fatalities.
[Interview : Stefano Pampanin‚ Professor of Civil Engineering
University of Canterbury] "Unfortunately‚ what we discovered just a few days after the earthquake by looking at its records of shaking intensity. Considering that Christchurch is a city of 450‚000 people‚ in a way‚ it is hard to say‚ but yes the city did quite well."
However‚ many of the buildings in the central business district of the city were built prior to the adaptation of the construction code.
[Reporter : Yang Ji-woo]
"Experts say… the city's unreinforced masonry buildings were very vulnerable… and other countries should learn from this mistake and adopt adequate building codes and guidelines to guard against any unforeseeable disaster."
Meanwhile‚ the city is now on the verge of losing its nearly 380-million-US-dollar export education industry.
The country's foreign embassy said there were more than 1‚400 international students enrolled in Christchurch‚ but the number has now dropped to just a few hundred after last week's tremor.
Authorities confirmed that more than 30 international students are still missing including two Korean siblings‚ surnamed Yu.
According to local media Korea is the largest contributor to the city's export education industry yet many Korean students have changed their mind about studying here.
The region's largest tertiary education institute‚ the University of Canterbury‚ hopes to prevent a further drop in overseas students.
[Interview : Rod Carr‚ Vice-Chancellor
University of Canterbury
] "We have been in touch with all of our international students‚ and they are now providing us with information about where they are and what their intentions are. And we are dealing with those students to make sure that the most appropriate advices to be given to them."
Despite ongoing rebuilding efforts and the determination of Christchurch residents the New Zealand government admitted that it could take at least 10 years to rebuild the main gateway to the country's South Island.
