Daily life on Yeonpyong Island is slowly returning to normal.
The island's postal service‚ an essential commodity in a place cut off from the mainland‚ was up and running just days after North Korea's attack disrupted it.
[Interview : Koh Jae-young‚ Mailman] "After the shelling‚ delivery from the mainland was suspended‚ so we couldn't work for two to three days. But after it resumed‚ we got back to work and delivered many packages to the Marines and to those back on the island."
The Yeonpyeong Post Office was damaged during the bombardment and the 70-year-old structure in need of restoration now barely stands with only minimal repairs done so far.
But the postal workers are providing more services in the aftermath of the shelling for those on and off the island.
[Interview : Chung Chang-kwon‚ Postmaster] "We deliver mail to those who are still here. For others who have not yet returned and are staying at temporary housing‚ we forward the mail back to the mainland so they can receive everything there. If they want us to keep it until they return‚ we store it here."
Electricity is also an indispensable service.
During the attack‚ power lines were cut and the local power station was damaged.
Engineers restored power within days‚ reconnecting power lines as well as repairing transformers.
And their work continues even after some 50 days.
[Interview : Shin Tae-geun‚ Electrician] "We worked day and night for 5 days after November 23rd. Now electricity is restored‚ but the empty houses still need repairs. As the owners come back‚ we visit each house to restore electricity."
And public safety is an important aspect of restoring the devastated island.
As many houses still remain empty‚ Yeonpyeong's police force is working around the clock‚ making sure all are safe on the island.
"Yeonpyeong is still in ruins‚ but hard working civil servants and engineers have restored and maintained the island as inhabitable. And they will continue until the island returns to the condition before the attack. Kang Seok-ho‚ Arirang News‚ Yeonpyeong."
