And in here is located a small elementary school.

On school days‚ the morning commuting hour at this remote elementary school‚ which has no more than a total of 18 students‚ is filled with the energetic and cheerful voices of the children. For these rural children who mostly live far from their school‚ commuting to and from school slightly differs from that of their peers in the urban areas.

Yuhyeon Elementary School] "Students who live far from school commute by carpools organized by parents or by buses. Until the classes begin‚ we have time to play. Then we head to the library to read books together."
At this rural school‚ which is run by 8 faculty members‚ the entire class of students commute to and from school together. Unlike urban children who take extracurricular lessons in private after school institutions‚ school is the principle educational ground for the children here‚ where they learn everything from folding origamis to piano.
Recently‚ a special after-school activity has been drawing attention from outside the school's grounds. It's the gayageum byeongchang band that incorporates singing.

Yuhyeon Elementary School] "The school had been giving piano lessons for 7 years. Accordingly‚ the children have acquired an advanced level of piano‚ which is the representative Western musical instrument. At one point‚ however‚ we thought about maintaining a balance between Oriental and Western musical instruments for the children‚ and that is how we began to teach them the gayageum."
The gayageum class here started about two years ago‚ after the school principal came up with the idea to help children nourish their dreams and hopes through learning a traditional musical instrument.
Through word of mouth‚ the band became slightly more than an after-school activity. It has been invited to almost every regional festival‚ including the Yeongwol Kim Sat-gat Festival and the Hoengseong Beef Festival.

Yuhyeon Elementary School] "I used to spend my after-school hours playing with the first graders outside. But ever since I started taking the after-school gayageum class‚ it's all I look forward to all day. It's so much fun."

Yuhyeon Elementary School] "I enjoy playing the gayageum‚ because I get to play more Korean songs than when I'm playing the piano."
What enabled the children of Hoengseong to become such talented gayageum players were the ardent passion of school principal Kim Sun-hui‚ as well as the dedication of gayageum instructor‚ Seo Mi-gyeong‚ who has been commuting to the school for the past two years to teach the children's gayageum byeongchang band.
[Interview : Seo Mi-gyeong‚ Gayageum instructor] "The students used to share the instruments‚ including the ones the school borrowed from other schools and my personal gayageum I brought from home. But this was problematic when we needed to practice as a class. So when each of the 18 students in the class received their own gayageum‚ I was just as thrilled as the children."
Until recently‚ the school had taught the gayageum to the children by borrowing the instrument
