요약정보
The North Korean issue is expected to top the agenda during bilateral talks between US President Barack Obama and leaders of other Asian countries.
This is according to National Security Council spokesman Mike Hammer on Thursday who told reporters that Washington will work closely with its partners of the six-party talks to move towards solving the issue.
He added that the US leader plans to listen carefully to solutions proposed by Korean President Lee Myung-bak with regards to dealing with Pyeongyang as he has handled very difficult issues related to the communist North‚ including the sinking of the South Korean warship Cheonan.
Hammer also stressed that Pyeongyang should take necessary steps to abandon its nuclear weapons program in order to return to the six-way talks and show authenticity in doing this.
Obama starts his ten-day visit to four Asian nations such as India‚ Indonesia‚ Korea‚ and Japan on Friday.
He will also meet with Chinese President Hu Jintao in Seoul on the sidelines of the G20 Summit and Russian President Dmitry Medvedev during his stay in Yokohama‚ Japan for the APEC Summit.
Meanwhile‚ Washington also hinted that the free trade deal between Korea and the US could be concluded if there is significant progress in the automobile issue.
When asked whether the trade pact will be sealed during Obama's visit to Seoul‚ White House press secretary Robert Gibbs said it depends on the negotiations.
He explained that progress made in changing certain details of the agreement‚ in particular‚ components that are "tilted against auto companies and autoworkers" in America.
Gibbs also emphasized that whether it is autos or other issues‚ the two countries have to make some progress.
