The Gwangju Biennale‚ Asia's most prestigious biennial contemporary art exhibit‚ has opened its gates to the public for the eighth time.
Under the title‚ ‘10‚000 Lives’‚ or ‘Maninbo’ in Korean‚ this year's exhibition mainly focuses on relationships that bind images to people and people to images.
Curated by the well-known artistic director‚ Massimilano Gioni‚ a diverse range of works by 134 artists from 30 different countries is being showcased.
[Interview : Ahn Min-hee‚ Chief of Exhibition Team] "’Maninbo’ means 'reports on ten-thousand lives.' We have chosen the title because this year's exhibited works reflect people's desire to visualize their everyday lives‚ as well as record historic events through images."
The title‚ ‘Maninbo‚’ was borrowed from a 30-volume epic poem by Korean writer and Nobel Prize favorite Ko Un‚ in which Ko portrays every person he ever met over 25 years.
As the title suggests‚ a good majority of the works in the main gallery show how people's lives remain related to the past through images.
From life-size sculptures that depict the hardships of Chinese peasants‚ to a room filled with newspapers published following the 911 attacks‚ the large-scale exhibits demonstrate the power of images in bringing the past to the present.
[Reporter : Han Da-eun‚ daeun @arirang.co.kr] "Aside from the historical works‚ the biennale also features famous pieces that address the interaction between images and personal memories."
At adjacent venues‚ pictures of the artists' everyday lives and mass collections of their favorite items are sublimated into art reflecting the power of images in using human desire‚ and at times‚ obsession to create a visual replacement of loved ones.
[Interview : Cho Sang-hee‚ Visitor] "Honestly‚ I don't fully understand their work. But it was refreshing to see how seemingly unimportant subjects can also become artistic‚ depending on the artists' interpretations."
The biennial will run through November 7th‚ offering visitors a chance to observe humanity's intense relationship with images‚ and also explore diverse walks of life.
