Thanks for staying with us.
Korean television shows‚ movies and musicians have been attracting attention across the globe and now Korean traditional music and poetry seem to be gaining ground on the international level.
A Harvard University professor who is also an expert in the Korean poetic genre of sijo is visiting Seoul for a recital.
Arirang Today's Hwang Sung-hee is here to tell us more.
Hello‚ Sung-hee.
[Reporter : ] Hello Min-ji‚ Hi Ki-yung.
First of all‚ are you guys all familiar with sijo Meet Professor David McCann‚ whose love for the Korean poetic form sijo has brought him here to Seoul.
Sijo is a three line Korean poetic form often exploring bucolic‚ metaphysical and cosmological themes.
It shares a common ancestry with the Japanese haiku and Professor McCann‚ who teaches an Asian poetry class at Harvard University always wondered wide the three-line Korean sijo could not enjoy the same widespread recognition as the Japanese poetic form.
This is why the professor embarked on a mission to popularize the sijo.
[Interview : David McCann‚ Professor
Harvard University] "I was trying to understand old style Korean folk song and closely connected to it was the sijo. One thing is the language‚ the imagery‚ the attitude‚ the voice in some of the old sijo poems‚ you can really hear an individual's voice‚ Jung-cheol for example‚ in some of his poems you can really hear him speaking. And I feel you can understand something about the Korean people through this sijo‚ it's just remarkable."
According to Professor McCann‚ his efforts to popularize the traditional Korean poetic form is very timely since a so-called "Korean Wave" of exported television shows‚ movies and musicians is attracting attention across the globe.
Yes‚ it is true that reading poems may not be such a thrill to some people which is why the Korean poetic forms should be presented to the public in new and creative ways.
[Reporter : Hwang Sung-hee
ssung86@arirang.co.kr] "At the Ewha Sijo Festival‚ Professor David McCann will demonstrate how smoothly Korean traditional music is able to be in harmony with international music by reciting his own sijo with the accompaniment of a jazz performance."
Composed of repetitive phrases and rhythmic elements‚ the sijo was meant to be sung or chanted.
And the modern jazzy touch added a new flavor to Korean traditional music.
[Interview : Jeon Hye-Young‚ Director of Korea Culture Research Institute
Ewha Womans University] "What is meaningful about today's event is that the professor will offer a modern translation of sijo with the accompaniment of jazz and some dancing. When people think of sijo‚ they see it as something very old and distant‚ but we believe that the sijo is a genre that can easily be enjoyed by the public‚ which is why we are holding this event."
At the concert hall‚ Professor McCann was not the lone foreigner confessing his love for Korean music.
Others in attendance awed the audience with their musical performances of ancient Korean culture saying that Korean traditional music taught them about Korea.
[Interview : Heather Willoughby‚ Professor
Ewha Womans University] "In Korean pansori‚ you have music that represents the Korean people‚ and their history and their experiences and it does that brilliantly So in a world of globalization‚ pansori is known‚ especially with changjak pansori‚ which are newly created pansori‚ they are bringing in contemporary issues and showing the world that it is ever evolving music."
The audience mostly students who did not regard Korean traditional poems and music as something exciting in the past were mesmerized by the series of performances.
For them‚ seeing foreign professors sing and perform Korean music was dynamic enough to spark their interests.
