요약정보
A reputable conservative American think tank based in Washington‚ the Heritage Foundation‚ tries to set the record straight in its recent report‚ "Ten China Myths for the New Decade‚" about the Chinese economy.
According to Heritage Foundation Asia expert Derek Scissors‚ most people‚ including lawmakers and politicians in the United States‚ are largely misguided by the Chinese economy with its robust annual economic growth of 9.8 percent rate over the past three decades.
The report‚ released last week‚ says‚ firstly‚ that China is not capable of surpassing the US economy within the next ten years‚ nor capable of performing as a global power.
According to Scissors‚ such myths are derived from the assumption that the American economy will continue to struggle‚ while China overtakes the lead as the engine for global growth.
Another factor working against China is that its society is aging rapidly and the number of people in the country under 30 years old will fall from 47 percent in 1985 to 26 percent by 2030‚ causing a huge reduction in its labor force.
The researcher confirms that China overtook Japan in terms of economic size‚ but that it is due to Japan suffering a great depression over the last 15 years.
The report strongly argues that China is not America's banker as it only possesses US Treasury bonds‚ which is less than 7-percent of the total fiscal deficit of the US and rather China is heavily dependent on America as US consumers account for 7.4 percent of China's entire gross domestic product.
In addition‚ China's current fixed exchange rate with its yuan currency would only work as long as the US dollar is stabilized.
The report also addresses the number eight myth by saying that China's robust GDP is only derived by the government's fixed investment‚ which accounts for 67 percent of the total.
Scissors finalizes his report by claiming that China still has a long way to go in order to reach the level of the US as China should work harder to lower its carbon emissions and strengthen its economic fundamentals.
