It's that time of the year when ringing bells from the Salvation Army welcomes personal donations for the less fortunate.
But things have changed‚ not the spirit of giving‚ but‚ the way of extending donations made easier thanks to the digital age.
The latest is cell phone donations as one can donate money by typing in the serial number sent via text message into a machine that registers the information.
The advantage is that there is no hassle and donors get a commemorative picture of themselves.
It's especially popular with young people who say it's easy and fun and rewarding as well.
Apart from cell phones there are ways to donate through traffic cards and the Internet.
This trend has certainly boosted the level of personal donations with that number amounting to some 47-million US dollars so far this year almost double compared to 2008.
And while personal donations have risen‚ donations from companies shrunk by 20 percent due to the tough economic times with religious groups not as giving as in the past.
Some are still sticking to the old ways of giving by setting money aside‚ like this man who runs a small photo store.
The shop has been dubbed the "good store" as much of the profit goes to charity‚ something the owner prides himself on‚ saying he has inspired his customers to do the same.
Non-profit organizations agree that there has been an increase in individual donations‚ which for now is generally headed to relatively larger organizations and far less to smaller institutions in need.
Hopefully‚ the holiday spirit will spill over to many more places as people choose the easier way of giving.
