Hundreds of people‚ both young and old‚ made their way to the National Theater of Korea this week‚ to get a taste of a modernized version of gukak.
[Reporter : Lee Ji-yoon‚ jiyoonjlee@arirang.co.kr
] "Out of their love for gukak‚ or traditional Korean music‚ some people have decided to step up their efforts to make it more popular especially among the younger generation‚ as well as promoting it around the world."
The audience was amazed by how an orchestra made up of NOT violins‚ cellos and pianos but of the gayageum‚ haegeum and piri‚ all traditional Korean instruments‚ could play such a wide range of genres‚ from musical medleys to folk songs.
The concert highlighted a blend of Korean music with more modern sounds which seemed to fit better with the busy lifestyles of many.
[Interview : Kim Seo-kyung‚ Audience] "It's not easy to come in contact with gukak too often‚ but I think a concert like this one helps bring the traditional music closer to the audience."
One group of dancers have decided to unite breakdancing with traditional Korean dance and gukak.
Bodies whirled and locked in gravity-defying poses as a fast-tempo gukak filled the stage.
[Interview : Lee Yong-hee‚ Executive Producer
Baby Battle B-boy] "We thought by combining Korean traditional dance with break-dancing‚ more people around the world would be able to easily come in contact with our traditional form of dance and music."
Although breakdancing and traditional Korean dance styles may sound like an odd combination for some the audience which included foreigners‚ commented on how they were surprised and amazed to see that such a rare blend could turn into such a beautiful performance.
[Interview : Micco Hidaka‚ Audience] "I didn't know the traditional dancing in Korea but it was a great opportunity to get to know the dancing in a modernized way and so I really enjoyed it"
These girls met in college‚ where they played traditional Korean instruments.
And now they perform together‚ as a group named Yien.
They play traditional Korean music‚ fused with other more popular genres‚ like hip-hop and classical music.
[Interview : Kang Dul-yi‚ Haegeum player] "We are a group of people playing gukak that can blend into everyday life.
So we tried to combine multiple modern genres with gukak so people of all ages could enjoy our music."
And just a month after their first concert‚ Yien has a wide fan base‚ showing interest not only in their music‚ but gukak in general.
As an increasing number of gukak professionals strive to popularize the genre whether by combining the music with other popular sounds or instruments their efforts will not be in vain‚ as gukak‚ original or fusion‚ will continue to be loved by not fewbut many in the future.
