요약정보
The sound of a chisel striking rock carries far and wide.
Skilled hands‚ that have been used to cut and chisel basalt for half a century‚ move with surprising speed.
Jang Gong-ik‚ a master craftsman of the stone sculptor's art‚ is more than 70 years old.
Stone turns into lifelike statues at his hands.
He's made thousands of Dolhareubang or "Stone Grandfathers"‚ with a great variety of expressions on their faces.
One of his sculptures‚ of a little black pig‚ looks so real that it seems as though it's ready to jump up and run off.
Here we see a woman swinging a baby's cradle while carrying a water jug on her back.
There is also a statue of Grandmother Seolmundae‚ featured in many of the island's myths and legends.
This is a replica of Hansanwat Village‚ which was destroyed during the April Third Uprising of 1948.
The lives and history of the people of Jeju are carved into local stone‚ transforming the mundane into works of art.
Far from being the smooth‚ delicate stone often used in sculpture‚ basalt is rough and porous.
The character of the stone brings alive the characters carved from it.
[Interview : Shin Sook-hee‚ Shin Soo-in
Tourists] "We get to see the usual collection of stones in other parks‚ but the sculptures here seem to be alive."
The cuts on his hands show how long and hard he has worked with stone.
There isn't a smooth spot on his hands.
[Interview : Jang Gong-ik
Master stone craftsman] "I think it was my destiny to work with stone. It's a mystery to me. I just feel great working with stone. Whether I'm working or just looking at stones‚ I'm always happy‚ so every waking moment I'm doing something with it."
Although one can easily pick up these kinds of stones from the ground in Jeju‚ once transformed into artwork they become rare treasures which convey the spirit and history of the island.
