요약정보
The late former President Kim Dae-jung's state funeral was held Sunday at the National Assembly after a six day mourning period following his death last Tuesday.
President Lee Myung-bak and other former presidents along with some 20-thousand politicians‚ citizens and foreign dignitaries have been invited to the funeral.
The service looked back on the former president's fight for democracy and his devotion to harmony between the two Koreas.
[Interview : Prime Minister Han Seung-soo] "Dear late former President Kim Dae-jung‚ you have dedicated your entire life to promoting human rights‚ peace and inter-Korean reconciliation. Your footprints will permanently remain in our proud history."
As the head of the state funeral committee‚ Prime Minister Han Seung-soo also added in his memorial address that the whole nation will begin a new era of national unity‚ moving beyond differences by region‚ class‚ ideology and generation following Kim's wishes during his lifetime.
The funeral also recalled the late president's efforts to revive the Korean economy following the Asian financial crisis in 1997 during his term in office between 1998 to 2003.
It was the nation's first state-funeral for a former president.
A state funeral was provided only once before Kim's for former president Park Chung-hee who died in 1979 during his term in office.
The government decided to hold a six-day state funeral for Kim considering his family's request and his contribution to democracy and inter-Korean reconciliation.
On the day of the funeral‚ Kim's family released to the public the late former president's diary which he kept writing right until he was hospitalized in mid-July.
The diary includes Kim's political insights such as his prediction that North Korea will return to the six-party nuclear talks and that the regime will eventually reach a practical agreement with the US.
On his 85th birthday‚ January 6th‚ he wrote that looking back it was a tumultuous life but that his life was dedicated to democracy‚ economic recovery of the country and inter-Korean reconciliation.
He wrote that there were shortcomings in his past but that he has no regrets.
