요약정보
The atmosphere at Gyeongbok Palace in downtown Seoul was one of respect and love for late former President Roh Moo-hyun.
One by one people from all walks of life including government officials‚ diplomatic envoys and citizens who came to bid farewell to Roh sat quietly soaking in the grief felt by his sudden and tragic death.
[Reporter : ] "Over 3-thousand people from all across the country have gathered here at Gyeongbok Palace in downtown Seoul to bid farewell to their beloved ex-President Roh Moo-hyun‚ who tragically took his life this past Saturday."
The vehicle carrying the former leader drove slowly into the palace with Chopin's "Requiem" playing in the background.
For some the sadness was more than they could bear as they burst into tears.
Following the national anthem a member of the funeral organizing committee briefly gave a summary of Roh's life from when he was a child to becoming the country's president.
Both Prime Minister Han Seung-soo and former Prime Minister Han Myeong-sook‚ co-chairs of the funeral committee‚ gave a few words of condolences saying that the former leader was a man who had dedicated his entire life to democracy‚ human rights and to fighting against authoritarianism.
[Interview : Han Seung-soo‚ Prime Minister] "The people will forever remember you Mr. President as a man who always stood by his convictions and principles. In your last letter‚ you said life and death are both part of nature and told us not to be too sad over your passing. But I fear that the people's heavy hearts will make it tough for you to go on."
Former Prime Minister Han Myeong-sook at one point broke down in tears‚ unable to continue her memorial speech.
[Interview : Han Myeong-sook‚ Former Prime Minister] "Even after you told your supporters to leave your side‚ we did not do anything about it. We are deeply sorry that we could not protect you."
This was followed by various religious rituals and a video montage of Roh prior to the bereaved family and others taking part in a ceremonial offering of chrysanthemums.
President Lee Myung-bak and former presidents Kim Dae-jung and Kim Young-sam who were present at the funeral did their part by laying a flower beside Roh's portrait.
[Interview : Lee Gook-geun‚ Mourner] "I am still in shock over Roh's death. He was only 63 years old. I wish he could have lived longer to see our country unite as one. Something like this should never happen again‚ but above all else‚ I hope people take this incident to stop the conflict and come together to form an advanced country."
The funeral ceremony for Roh Moo-hyun who is now being regarded as someone who was truly a people's president officially ended with a 21-gun salute.
As it had entered the palace the vehicle carrying Roh left the funeral in the same fashion with his family and loved ones trailing behind.
