Pristine beaches‚ a cooling ocean breeze‚ and volcanic rocks. These are some of the words that are synonymous with Jeju Island. The island was formed as a result of volcanic activity‚ and thus numerous different types of rocks can be found all around Jeju Island. The people of Jeju have been using stones to create sculptures and walls that Jeju became famous for.
Master sculptor Jang Gong Ik has been making stone sculptures for most of his life. It's been 50 years‚ and yet he continues to work on his sculptures.
As he nears 80 years in age‚ it's good to know that his son joined in.

Jeju Volcanic Island and Lava Tubes
The beauty of the natural rock formations on Jeju has helped the island earn international recognition. The volcanic formations and lava tubes of Jeju‚ which make up 10.3% of the entire island‚ was listed as one of Unesco's World Cultural Heritages.
In every part of Jeju island‚ the influence of volcanic activity is evident.
Jeju Gotjawal
Mid-slope regions‚ typically with volcanic rocks‚ streams‚ and broad-leaved trees. Make up around 6% of Jeju Island
At the heart of Jeju is the Jeju Gotjawal. A variety of rare plant species grow wild in this area thanks to it's temperature and humidity.
[Interview : Song Shi-tae‚ Director
Gotjawal Preservation Group] "Gotwajwal is a very important area of Jeju Island. Because of the consistent humidity level and temperature‚ rare species of plants can grow here. Also‚ underground water can be tapped here."
Sculptor Jang Gong Ik works on his sculptures at least 8 hours a day. He makes around 80 sculptures a year. So far‚ he has created over 100 thousand pieces. He only uses basalt to make his sculptures. Basalt has unique qualities that Jang prefers over other stones. Basalt found in Jeju is resistant to weathering‚ and the color doesn't fade. The surface of these rocks are dark and shimmery.
Basalt is excavated and sold in strictly controlled quantities. Special precautionary measures are taken to prevent illegal excavation or smuggling of Jeju basalt.
