President Lee Myung-bak will embark on a three-day tour to Thailand Friday to attend multilateral summits with leaders from member states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations or ASEAN as well as China and Japan.
The Presidential Office says in the meeting with ASEAN leaders Saturday the Korean president will try to bolster Seoul's ties with the 10 ASEAN members.
In line with his initiative called the New Asia Cooperative Diplomacy announced during his state-visit to Indonesia last month President Lee is expected to discuss the establishment of free trade deals with the economies in the bloc.
Officials say that President Lee will also invite the Southeast Asian countries to the Korea-ASEAN Special Summit to be held on Jeju Island in June.
The ASEAN leaders meeting with Korea‚ China and Japan or the "ASEAN Plus Three" summit is to focus on cooperation between Southeast and Northeast Asia in dealing with the global economic crisis.
The top office in Seoul says that the meeting will cover coordination of macroeconomic policies including promptly launching a 120-billion US dollar fund for multilateral currency swaps.
On Sunday India‚ Australia‚ and New Zealand will join the ASEAN venue in a separate forum of the East Asia Summit with its focus on food‚ energy and global finance.
On the sidelines of the ASEAN gatherings President Lee will also hold bilateral summits with leaders from Thailand‚ Japan and Malaysia.
President Lee will also join his counterparts from China and Japan for a trilateral summit.
