Meanwhile at another gathering here in Seoul‚ global leaders from various sectors are highlighting the role of private firms in pursuing universal principles.
The first session of the two-day conference was reportedly successful and participants are continuing their second session on this Wednesday.
Our Kim Youngwon tells us more.
Experts are putting their heads together in Seoul at a conference held by three organizations falling under the United Nations umbrella.
These UN bodies are hoping to persuade businesses to take more responsibility for creating benefits outside the marketplace.
[REPORTER : Kim Youngwon‚lydiakim@arirang.co.kr] ''At this conference organized by the global body‚ the spotlight is on financial leaders and their role in maintaining the health of Asian economies.''
To achieve this‚ the three groups namely‚ the UN Global Compact‚ the UN Environment Programmes Finance Initiative‚ and Principles for Responsible Investment have invited renowned finance experts to the Korean capital.
[INTERVIEW : Ban Kimoon‚ Secretary General‚United Nations] ''I applaud your work. You are living proof that environmental stewardship‚ social responsibility‚ and good governors are understood as necessary to endure in success and competitiveness.''
The keyword here is actually three words: corporate social responsibility.
It boils down to businesses taking voluntary steps to carry out the UN's goals in areas like human rights and improving the environment.
As reflected in the choice of venue‚ the regional focus was Asia.
[INTERVIEW : Han Seungsoo‚Korean Prime Minister] ''The Asian region has realized that we cannot sustain our active economic growth without enhancing governance and transparency. Against this factor‚ Asian region is becoming more and more engaging in promoting CSR.''
Participants discussed how Asia's rapid growth and flexibility arising from fewer government restrictions could influence the global marketplace.
Group discussions took place by sector ranging from public policy‚ governance and transparency to environmental issues.
''I'm very interested to meet some of the Asian companies to discuss with them how they see the future‚ what we can do together. And I see participants headed to it is to start to make some commitments to take the leaderships in their businesses and to start to set energy efficiency and carbon reduction goals.''
At the end of the day‚ the three UN-affiliated groups saw new members from local government heads to Korean CEOs eager to take part in the global body's movement.
''The new membership will add up a force for strengthening corporate social responsibility in Korea and UNGC values in Korea and beyond mainly in Asia.''
There is hope that through this conference and others like it more domestic firms will add social causes to their corporate mission statements.
