요약정보
Sunday marked the Day of Disabled Persons in Korea‚ aimed at providing a more fulfilling life for people with disabilities.
Yoo Jihae takes a look at how Seoul is planning to do just that.
Seoul's population of disabled people has jumped 77-thousand since 2004 for a total of more than 300-thousand.
The trend is in large part due to an aging society.
According to the city's health authorities‚ a full 88 percent of Seoul's disabled were not born with their afflictions but picked them up during the course of their lives and therefore usually means a more difficult employment situation.
Responding under the slogan ''Barrier-Free‚'' Seoul is trying to make the city more livable for its growing population of people with disabilities.
The city is launching more modified taxi cabs for both long and short distances and that take off from any one of Seoul's 29 driver centers scattered throughout the capital.
[INTERVIEW : Park Youngsik‚ Cab Driver‚] ''It has been hard for them to find a cab on time. They had to wait at least 40 minutes or even an hour. 50 more cabs are being added now‚ so this has resolved the trouble of waiting. But still‚ there could be more.''
Those 50 add to 170 specially-designed cabs that run 24 hours a day‚ seven days a week with the cab fare cut down to 30 percent of the usual rate.
[INTERVIEW : Oh Changhyun] ''It's very difficult for people like us to move from one place to another. But I am glad more cabs are here to help us commute. The price is also reasonable. It's great.''
The city government has added more errand service centers and operates about 100 of them throughout Seoul.
These services help with daily chores such as grocery shopping‚ pet-sitting and laundry while another service called Happy Call Center has been launched to offer a chance to engage in some friendly conversation.
Furthermore in order to encourage economic independence‚ more job exhibitions and training programs are to be held across the city.
[INTERVIEW : You Siyoung‚ Chief of Disability Welfare Division] ''At present‚ the paradigm of disability care is shifting from rehabilitation to allowing them to stand on their own feet. We hope to help them boost their income‚ assist them with their daily chores to settle down and be independent.''
[INTERVIEW : Yoo Jihae‚julz1201@arirang.co.kr] ''With the city government ready to bring more value and well-being of people with disabilities‚ the vision of a more pleasant city to live in looks promising.
