In other news President Roh Moo-hyun is close to wrapping up his visit to Italy… meeting with key Italian officials to bolster the bilateral economic relationship.
Our presidential office correspondent Sung Tae-kyung joins me live on the phone from Rome.
So what's on President Roh’s itinerary on his last day in Rome He is holding talks with Italian President Giorgio Napolitano as we speak.
Korea and Italy have maintained friendly relations… since forming diplomatic ties more than 120 years ago.
Friday’s meeting is seen an opportunity to further strengthen bilateral economic cooperation.
Two-way trade in 2005 reached seven billion dollars.
Seoul and Rome also want to also improve their cooperation on the international field… such as in the United Nations.
President Roh will later hold summit talks with Italian Prime Minister Romano Prodi… on boosting bilateral exchanges in information technology‚ shipping and culture.
The Korean leader arrives home Sunday from his southern Europe trip.
He’ll bring with him Spain and Italy’s support for a permanent peace on the Korean Peninsula… not to mention contracts to help Korean companies penetrate the lucrative European market.
I hear economic cooperation was NOT the only focus for President Roh during his visit‚ Taekyung.
Yes‚ a lot of it was also about cultural and political exchanges.
In Spain‚ President Roh attended the opening ceremony of the Madrid International Contemporary Art Festival.
Korea is the special guest in this year’s event.
He also agreed with Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapetero to host regular political forums with high-ranking officials to maintain close ties.
In Rome‚ President Roh also visited Vatican leaders… who reaffirmed their support for a peaceful resolution to North Korea’s nuclear standoff.
So yes… his trip resulted in several agreements in sectors other than economy.
