Italy's Senate expels ex-Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi over tax fraud conviction

Italy's former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi has been expelled from the country's Senate leaving him vulnerable to arrest over a series of criminal allegations.
Senate leaders voted to expel the billionaire former leader with immediate effect Wednesday following his conviction for tax fraud.
Berlusconi told a rally in Rome that it was a "day of mourning" for democracy.
The vote opens an uncertain new phase in Italian politics‚ with Berlusconi vowing to use all his extensive resources to attack Prime Minister Enrico Letta's coalition government.
Berlusconi was convicted of tax fraud in October 2012 for masterminding a complex system of illegally inflated invoices to cut the tax bill for his Mediaset television empire. Reporter : firstname.lastname@example.org
