요약정보
The National Gallery in Prague is one of the oldest museums in Europe and now Koreans can save themselves the airfare if they want to see over a hundred pieces of Czech modern art here in Korea.
From abstract art to surrealism before World War II Michelle Kim reports on the special exhibition brought to Seoul.
The exhibition‚ "Memory of a Landscape I Have Never Seen‚" showcases 107 works by 28 Czech artists depicting the change of Czech Modern Art from 1895 until 1943
This is the first major exhibition of Czech modern art in Korea‚ and the works were culled from the collection of the National Gallery in Prague.
The museum's general director‚ Vladimir Rosel‚ spoke with Arirang TV about the exhibition in Seoul.
"We wanted to present Czech Art in it's peak because‚ for us‚ it was a very important period. It was a new country‚ a newly established democracy and at the same time we were representing a modern way of living. So this is the modern art that was very similar to the rest of the world and it represents the achievements of the new country and the new way the art was adopted in the Czech Republic and at that time Czechoslovakia."
The Czech Republic went through a period of rapid socio-political change between the late 19th to early 20th centuries‚ from the decline of imperialism to the rise of nationalism‚ the outbreak of World War I‚ and then Westernization.
Through it all‚ Czech art has been greatly influenced by these changes‚ absorbing each shift in society and then reflecting their new perspectives in their art.
The exhibition is divided into three section‚ the first of which showcases Czech art from the late 19th to early 20th centuries‚ when the Czech artists gradually began to adop Expressionism an Cubism.
The second part displays artworks influenced by the aftermath of World War I and the independence of Czechoslovakia‚ as the artists adopted different styles‚ such as Surrealism‚ to express the optimism felt in Czech society during this era.
The final section contains Czech art from 1931 to 1943‚ where the artworks from this period express the atmosphere of anxiety that pervaded society in anticipation of World War II.
