Violence and looting broke out in the English cities of Birmingham‚ Bristol‚ Liverpool‚ and Nottingham after rioting and disorder in London continued for a third day.
A man was shot in the face in the city of Leeds and at least 450 people have been arrested following a wave of "copycat criminal activity" over the past three days.
The rioting began in the Tottenham area of London on Saturday over the fatal shooting by police of Mark Duggan‚ who was unarmed.
The disturbance triggered similar rampages in other boroughs and soon spread to other cities in the country.
[Interview : Hira Khawaja‚ London resident] "They were just teenagers‚ I think they were having fun. But for them it is fun‚ but other people it is life. They shouldn't do that."
As the disorder spread so quickly in London and across England‚ police struggled to control the unrest.
[Interview : Larry Humphries‚ London resident] "What I couldn't understand was‚ where was the helicopter[Interview : Gavin Barwell‚ MP for Croydon Central‚ South London] "There clearly weren't enough of them‚ and they didn't have the necessary equipment. So we need to make sure that we get officers from other forces into London so we have sufficient people on the ground."
The mayor of London‚ Britain's home secretary‚ and Prime Minister David Cameron returned early from holiday and after chairing an emergency meeting on Tuesday‚ Cameron said that he will recall parliament this Thursday and increase police numbers to 16-thousand from the current 6-thousand put on the streets Monday night.
[Interview : David Cameron‚ British Prime Minister] "And we will do everything to strengthen and assist those police forces that are meeting this disorder."
England's Football Association has called off Wednesday's friendly with The Netherlands at Wembley Stadium‚ while Carling Cup matches have also been postponed.
