Taiwan is considering deploying missile boats and tanks to islands in the South China Sea as a countermeasure against heightened regional tensions over ongoing territorial claims.
The country's defense ministry said on Sunday that it plans to deploy missile boats in the South China Sea and tanks on the Spratly and the Prata islands as the coastguards currently stationed there are only armed with light weapons.

Recent territorial disputes have raised concerns in Taiwan that coastguard units may not be able to handle potential conflicts.
However‚ the ministry said the missile boats and tanks is only an option offered to the coastguards and added that a final decision has not been made yet.
Meanwhile‚ hundreds of Vietnamese gathered outside the Chinese embassy in Hanoi‚ Vietnam on Sunday protesting against China's territorial infringements in the area.
The two countries are both holding military drills in the South China Sea and they have had a number of maritime confrontations.
[Interview : Vietnamese protester] "China has challenged the Vietnamese people by invading into the South China Sea. As a Vietnamese national‚ I will fight for my country."
Another strike also took place outside the US embassy in the Philippines with people opposing US involvement in the issue.
[Interview : Filipino protester] "There will be no real independence‚ as far as foreign policy is concerned‚ as far as the Phillippine government allowing US intervention in many areas of our domestic affairs."
But despite such public demonstrations‚ Washington dispatched its nuclear-powered aircraft carrier‚ the George Washington‚ on Sunday to take part in a joint multinational patrol of the western Pacific‚ including the South China Sea.
