Belgium splitting into two separate states seems to have become a possibility in Europe as the Dutch-speaking New Flemish Alliance is expected to win the nation's general election that was held on Sunday.
Exit polls show the Flemish separatist party led by Bart de Wever is on course of becoming the biggest single party in Belgium's lower house of parliament for the first time in three years.
A public survey conducted ahead of the vote forecast the NFA‚ which wants to fully divide the country and become an independent member of the European Union‚ to secure 26 percent of the ballot.
The country's government is currently horizontally separated into Dutch speaking Flanders and French speaking Wallonia.
The conflict between the northern and southern regions first started after Belgium became independent from the Netherlands in the early 19th century.
Back then‚ Wallonia seized power and chose French as its official language drawing strong opposition from Flanders.
However‚ during the 20th century the Dutch speaking northern region saw rapid growth in chemical and distribution industries and became an economically dominant power in the nation.
Flanders has been subsidizing Wallonia for nearly 20 years after the traditional industry collapsed in the southern part of the country.
This has led frustrated Flemish voters to support the right-wing party as recent economic and financial crises further increased the burden to aid the dependent southern area.
However‚ a break up of Belgium won't be easy and definitely will not happen immediately as a bilingual coalition of at least four parties is needed to secure half of the seats in the lower house.
Instead experts predict that the NFA will likely have a much stronger voice and power within the federal government.
