요약정보
Around 3000 Habitat for Humanity volunteers travel around the world to help build and repair homes for those in need.
Recently‚ former U.S. President Jimmy Carter and his wife Rosalynn travelled to Vietnam to promote the program.
Around 200 families reside in Dong Xa village‚ many of whom lost their homes in the recent Ketsana and Mirinae typhoons.
Although local authorities provided the residents with around 80 square meters of land‚
scores of villagers‚ who can't afford to build homes‚ live in cramped boats‚ with little or no access to electricity‚ clean water and sanitation facilities.
The Carter group arrived with around 200 volunteers‚ who will build 32 permanent houses‚ each complete with a drilled well‚ water tank‚ toilet‚ septic tank and access to electricity.
And this is just the beginning of Habitat for Humanity's current work in Vietnam.
Pop star Madonna is not being welcomed in Malawi‚ South Africa these days.
Her recent effort at charity‚ leasing land on which to build a school‚ has been met with much negativity by the villagers.
Although the Malawi Government claims to have paid the villagers about 500 thousand U.S. dollars‚ which is approximately the same amount that was paid for the lease of the land by Madonna‚ the villagers are demanding more.
On one side of the debate‚ the villagers argue that they have been farming in the area for years‚ and that the sudden loss of land affects their lives drastically.
On the other side‚ government officials claim that the land is government-owned‚
and warned that squatters and protesters will be arrested.
In spite of the complexities involved‚ Madonna aims to continue with similar charitable efforts‚ should this project prove successful.
The Baghdad Zoo‚ contained inside the Al-Zawraa Park‚ is returning to its former glory.
With a sharp decline in violence‚ and the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraqi urban centers in June‚ life is tentatively returning to normal for locals.
After several years‚ the park‚ once the largest in the Middle East‚ now teems with families on Fridays.
During the violence‚ that surged in light of the US-led 2003 invasion‚ hundreds of animals from the zoo escaped‚ were stolen‚ died of thirst or hunger‚ or were shot by U.S. troops.
But today‚ many of the animals have been found or replaced‚ and the park has been given some upgrades.
However‚ as attacks by insurgents still remain common‚ the park is guarded by special police units and visitors are frisked for weapons or explosives.
Thanks to these efforts‚ about 3 million Iraqis were able to visit to zoo during a recent four-day Muslim holiday.
