요약정보
Africa is hoping to lure Asian tourists especially for the upcoming 2010 World Cup.
But even though tourism has grown steadily over the past few years Africa still attracts less than 5 percent of all global tourists.
So travel experts are looking to increasingly attract Asian tourists in efforts to boost African economies and tourism-related industries.
Africa is famous for tourist destinations centered on wildlife‚ breathtaking landscapes‚ cultural variety and deserts.
With such abundant beauty and with two billion people expected to travel around the world next year the possibilities are endless.
Now far more open to the world African nations have been reeling from the economic downturn due to high oil prices and food costs as well as slumping demand for their exports.
Tourism has become a key source of foreign currency with which African states hope to remedy trade imbalances.
The UN World Tourism Organization expects arrivals to Africa to increase just 2 to 3 percent this year compared to an 8 percent growth in 2007 and 5 percent in 2008.
Too many bright lights from a city drown out one's view of the stars which is frustrating astronomers at an observatory in the French Pyrenees.
Astronomer Thierry Roudier says it's in the public interest to give astronomers the chance to observe the Milky Way and to enable them to study how humanity fits into the cosmos.
As such the Pic du Midi Observatory has called on nearby city officials to reduce nighttime artificial light.
They hope to create a 'dark-sky reserve' around the observatory.
Their biggest complaint is with the city of Toulouse which is located approximately 200 kilometers away.
At night many city lights are pointed upward obscuring the stars.
Of particular offense is the popular tourist monument of Saint Sernin Basilica which is lit nightly with powerful spotlights.
The Deputy Mayor of Toulouse seems to agree saying that the city should find an appropriate balance between meeting the needs of its citizens and those of the astronomers.
City officials have pledged to dim their lights at night and to switch to more energy-efficient light bulbs.
For artisans in India's Kashimir region recent economic times have been tough.
Demand both domestically and abroad has plummeted for items such as carpets‚ walnuts‚ paper mache creations and pashmina shawls.
But the Jammu and Kashmir Bank wants to help artisans.
In a bid to protect and even expand local businesses the bank has announced the J&K Bank Craftsmen Livelihood Finance and Dastakar Scheme.
The program will loan money at low interest rates.
One pashmina shawl dealer said that she is hopeful that the initiative will help support the artisan community.
Artisans and craftsmen aged 18 to 60 years old can qualify for the loan program.
