요약정보
In Paris the United Nations announced the winners of this year's "Champions of the Earth" competition.
Seven environmentalists received awards for coming up with innovative solutions to solving some of the toughest environmental problems.
Those honored come from a wide variety of disciplines and have challenged the limits of traditional thinking when it comes to the environment.
The winners are chosen in the categories of policy leadership‚ science and innovation‚ entrepreneurial vision‚ and inspiration and action.
Ron Gonen an American entrepreneur and founder of RecycleBank developed a system that rewards households based on their level of recycling.
In a partnership with city governments the recycling containers contain a computer chip that keeps track of the household recycling whenever the garbage man empties the bin.
The household can then use their RecycleBank points at online stores.
Some of the other winners' projects include a wind turbine development‚ a youth program to rehabilitate garbage sites‚ and a rainforest protection program.
As drug wars rage in Mexico the government and public have become increasingly interested in security technology.
The Expo Seguridad Mexico showed off the latest developments from manufacturers‚ distributors and integrators.
Approximately 6‚300 people died from Mexico's drug wars last year with the violence spreading to US cities including Phoenix and Tucson.
At the expo‚ Mercedes-Benz displayed its bullet-proof car which representatives say is helpful to have in the event of a kidnapping.
Organizers say the Mexican government's annual security budget will increase to 30.1 billion pesos or close to 2.3 billion US dollars in 2009 compared to 19.7 billion pesos in 2008.
In Germany a government stimulus program designed to prop up its ailing car industry has had an unexpected result.
Earlier this year the German government set up a rebate of 2‚500 euros for Germans who replace their old car with a new automobile.
However Germans who are trying to make their euros stretch even further have taken the incentive but bought new cars in Poland where the euro stands strong against the Polish currency.
German drivers go back home with a new car approximately 30 percent cheaper.
Their purchases account for 10 to 15 percent of current car sales in Poland.
Some German customers are sheepish about taking advantage of a measure designed to help their own ailing economy.
But due to European Union rules barring countries from giving home companies an advantage the German government cannot prevent these bargain hunters from going the distance for a new car.
