The government of Czech Republic led by Prime Minister Mirek Topolanek has been ousted after losing a no-confidence parliamentary vote.
One hundred and one of the 197 lawmakers in the lower house voted for the dismissal of the three-party coalition government on Tuesday. This is the first time a government has lost power by parliament since the country split from Czechoslovakia in 1993. Following the vote Mr. Topolanek said he would act according to the constitution adding he could resign. The Czech Republic is currently midway through its six-month rotating presidency of the European Union.
Even with the no-confidence vote‚ however‚ the cabinet is expected to finish the EU presidency term albeit with much less influence. The no confidence motion was sought by the opposition Social Democratic Party which has been blaming the government's ineffective handling of the impact from the global economic crisis.
