요약정보
The tone set for the inauguration of Barack Obama as the 44th President of the United States is "a people's inauguration" aiming to be the most open and accessible one ever.
With the US in dire straights financially the celebration seeks to strike a hopeful note during these uncertain economic times.
Under the theme of "A New Birth of Freedom‚" Obama will start off the day at Saint John's Episcopal Church near the White House. Senator Dianne Feinstein will make the opening remarks at the presidential swearing-in ceremony‚ followed by Evangelical Pastor Rick Warren delivering the invocation. The musical lineup will feature Aretha Franklin and a quartet that includes Yo-Yo Ma and Itzhak Perlman‚ who are set to perform an original piece of music by legendary composer John Williams.
The official program begins 30 minutes before noon when Vice President-elect Joseph Biden is sworn in. At noon on the west front steps of the Capitol building‚ Chief Justice John Roberts Jr. will oversee the changing of the guard by administrating the oath‚ traditionally done with a Bible in hand‚ however this time it will be done on Abraham Lincoln's Bible.
Obama will deliver his inaugural address followed by Elizabeth Alexander‚ the incoming chair of African-American studies at Yale University‚ reading a poem she composed specifically for the event. Lastly‚ Reverend Dr. Joseph E. Lowery will deliver the benediction and Obama will then escort outgoing President George W. Bush to a departure ceremony.
And from 2:30 p.m. the inaugural parade will make its 2.7-kilometer way down Pennsylvania Avenue from the Capitol building to the White House.
Some 80 concerts‚ 10 official inaugural balls and numerous unofficial celebrations are planned with nearly 4 million people expected to be on hand. Experts say that this swearing-in ceremony reflects the incoming Obama administration's spirit of change and integrity‚ particularly the Obama-Lincoln parallel.
[Interview : Yi Okyeon‚ Dept. of Intl. Relations Seoul National University] "Both men [Obama and Lincoln] share their love of words‚ believing that words‚ rhetoric and oratory can change people's minds and perceptions. His list of guests certainly reflects the historic election of Obama and the country's expectation of change and hope."
And expectations are extremely high for Obama as the presidential transition is mostly about bringing order to the government and hope to the public.
