The Washington Post tallied the cost of major US government projects over the last 100 years and found that the most expensive was the effort to wage the Second World War.
The tab for the US government back then was 290 billion dollars. That price tag roughly translates into an equivalent of 3.6 trillion dollars in today's funds.
The next most-expensive project was the Vietnam War which cost an estimated 698 billion dollars to fight. This means that the Obama administration's planned 850 billion dollar plan to stimulate the US economy will become the second most-expensive project in the nation's history. As for the list today‚ the third most expensive is the war in Iraq.
The price tagThe Post also suggested that the US government's 17-billion-dollar rescue measure to save its automakers will be interpreted as a hostile step as American leaders are calling for world nations to keep trade doors open.
