Now more on oil prices:
A series of violent protests against high fuel prices erupted across Europe with protesters demanding governments to something about the situation.
The European Commission has drawn up some measures to deal with the soaring prices but will it be enough?
Yoo Jihae reports.
The soaring cost of fuel spiraled into chaos in the streets of a city in southern Spain this week.
Angry protesters threw fruit and empty boxes at a local government building‚ demanding the Spanish government take immediate measures to counter the impact of high fuel prices.
In Madrid‚ truckers deliberately clogged all roads entering the Spanish capital by driving at a snail's pace‚ calling for minimum guaranteed haulage rates to offset soaring oil prices and help them compete with big trucking companies.
[INTERVIEW : Carlos Compoy‚ Striking Truck Driver‚] ''This is like a tug of war. We mustn't give up.
This is the last bullet in our gun. If this doesn't work‚ then we lose.''
Such protests have erupted across Western Europe including in Belgium‚ France and Portugal with striking truckers‚ fishermen and railway workers taking to the streets‚ disrupting food and fuel supplies.
[INTERVIEW : Mandez‚ Spanish butcher ] ''I think it will get worse next week because by then‚ we will be running out of goods.''
The European Commission has released a set of proposals to improve energy efficiency and diversify the energy supply and called for support measures to help those hit hardest by rising oil prices.
[INTERVIEW : Milton Leitenberg‚ Spokesman‚European Union Executive Committee] ''These measures will not be leaving people behind‚ but empower them to move on and to be able to play a role.''
The EU's executive body will first focus on those engaged in fishing‚ farming and transport businesses and is slated to discuss support measures in detail at an upcoming meeting next week.
Protests related to rising food and oil prices have been breaking out in a growing list of countries.
With the citizens of relatively rich EU nations getting in on the act‚ this issue seems to be turning into the political hot button issue many predicted.
