U.N. Secretary General Ban Kimoon is urging the world's leading economies to help children in Africa.
In an exclusive interview with Arirang TV on the sidelines of the Summit of the African Union‚ the head of the U.N. called on Korea to play a bigger role in helping the children.
Kim Bumsoo reports.
United Nations Secretary-General Ban Kimoon has called for a global effort to lower the child mortality rate in the world's less-developed countries especially in Africa.
Mr. Ban made the comments during an exclusive interview with Arirang TV after attending the 10th Summit of the African Union in Addis Ababa‚ Ethiopia.
''Sadly‚ still in this world almost one billion people live with less than a dollar a year day. Ten million children die from abject poverty. This is very sad and many millions of people die still from preventable diseases like malaria‚ tuberculosis.''
Over nine-and-a-half million children die each year before their fifth birthday from diseases that could be prevented through basic health services like vaccinations and‚ and improved living standards.
In sub-Saharan Africa the situation is so grave that almost one out of every six children there dies before the age of five.
Mr. Ban urged greater contributions by the world's leading countries as well as newly developed economies.
''I 'd like to ask Korean government and people to do more to commensurate with economic development. Korea now is ranked 10th or 11th largest economy in the world and democratic society. Korea has much resources to provide‚ therefore‚ we need to be able to share technologies and experiences and resources to those poor people who are expecting such help from Korea and other developed countries.''
Korea gained membership in the U.N. in 1991.
A decade-and-half later‚ the Asian country has increased its financial contributions to the world body to over 80 million U.S. dollars.
And recently Korea's deputy U.N. representative said the government will quote ''make every effort to pay the assessed contribution on time and in full.''
Critics say‚ however‚ that in line with its economic power‚ Korea could offer more.
