요약정보
The spread of Korean pop culture across Asia‚ known simply as the Korean wave‚ has also reached Central Asia.
In Mongolia‚ this wave is not just boosting ticket and album sales for Korean movies and music‚ it's encouraging locals to take up the Korean language.
Sung Tae-kyung has this story.
There's only one movie theater in the capital of Mongolia. And here‚
RECORDED: "Korean movies are being screened at least twice a month on average."
Owned by a Korean‚ Korean movies have been screened here since it opened in 2003.
RECORDED: "I often come here during the weekends to watch Korean films‚ because they are fun."
And considering that the average wage of a doctor is $100 a month in Mongolia‚ the 3 dollar price of a movie ticket is quite an investment.
But Mongolians aren't just interested in Korean movies‚ they're also watching dramas on Korean TV channels.
SUNG TAE-KYUNG‚ REPORTER: "For some‚ watching Korean soap operas on TV is not enough to satisfy their appetite toward Korean culture.
This is why every year‚ about 460 Mongolians‚ enter Ulaan Baatar University to learn the Korean language."
Ulaan Baatar University has been teaching Korean to Mongolians since its establishment in 1993.
RECORDED: "Learning the Korean language is different from‚ say liking 'made in Korea' cars or cell phones. By wanting to learn Korean‚ Mongolians are saying that they want to truly understand the lives and culture of Koreans."
And last year‚ the competition to enter the Korean language department was so high only one out of 12 applicants succeeded. Mongolians see Korea as a land of opportunity‚ and refer to Korea as "Solongus‚" meaning "rainbow."
RECORDED: "My dream is to study in Korea. Then I will come back to Mongolia to set up a tourist agency."
For many students at Ulaan Baatar University‚ learning Korean isn't just another hobby‚ but considered a ticket to success.
