New outbreaks of bird flu have been detected in Egypt‚ while France also reported its first suspected case on Friday.
The United Nations is expressing growing concerns about the virus spreading through West Africa.
Lee Jee-won reports.
The first "probable" case of bird flu in France.
The French agriculture ministry said on Friday‚ that a wild duck found dead in the southeast Ain region had the H5 avian influenza virus.
DOMINIQUE BUSSEREAU‚ FRENCH AGRICULTURE MINISTER: "A number of dead ducks have been found. One of them has been tested and the test has shown the presence of avian flu‚ of the virus H5 and it is 90 percent certain it is the virus H5N1 which means the most pathogenic and the most dangerous."
The ministry added that further tests are being conducted‚ but the results are not expected before Saturday‚ French time.
The prompt alert about the virus‚ which came just days after the first dead duck was found‚ is seen as a result of the country's effective surveillance and testing procedures.
France is the European Union's leading poultry producer‚ with 200‚000 farms that raise 900 million chickens‚ turkeys‚ ducks and other birds annually.
Over in Egypt‚ a government spokesperson said that the lethal H5N1 strain of the birdflu virus has been found in chickens and turkeys there.
An emergency meeting of the Cabinet took place and public health warnings were broadcast on television.
Magdy Rady‚ the spokesperson said the government tested 7 samples of sick birds‚ all of which were raised domestically.
This is the second time a birdflu outbreak has occurred in Africa‚ after Nigeria.
There are no reported human infections in Egypt.
Avian influenza has killed more than 90 people around the world since 2003.
The disease has swept from Asia to Europe and Africa‚ raising fears of a global pandemic‚ if the virus mutates into a form that is easily transmitted between humans.
