This fall‚ Korean pianist Cho Seong-jin amazed the world. At 21 years old‚ he won the prestigious International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition. "These days‚ I only play Chopin. Another hot pop-culture trend this year was cooking shows. They ranged from ways to make cooking easier to creating new recipes with certain ingredients and a limited amount of time. The humor and wit of Korea's top chefs helped drive the success of the TV shows. And a new term emerged. "Chef-tainer‚" combing the words chef and 'entertainer‚ was born on the back of the programs' rave reviews. Choi Hyun-seok is one of those chefs and he had a lot to say about the love being shown for cooking. "I think cooking shows are popular because people can learn from them‚ and it's also entertaining to watch. A few years ago‚ I wished that people's perception and treatment of chefs were better. But thanks to the programs‚ many now appreciate the work we do and I am very thankful for that." Baseball also made headlines. Three Korean players‚ including Kim Hyun-soo‚ were drafted by Major League Baseball teams. Now five Koreans will be playing in the world's best league next year. Korea is rooting them on and if they play well‚ it will help grow interest in Korea's skilled baseball players. "Korean Baseball is now more widely recognized around the world with current players performing strongly and Korea's national team competing well in international competitions.
