Washington says it's ready to take the final few steps towards ratifying the Korea-US free trade agreement.
In a letter to members of Congress on Monday‚ US Trade Representative Ron Kirk said that his office "has completed its preparatory work on the US-Korea trade deal" and is ready to begin technical talks on legislation to implement the trade pact which was originally signed back in June 2007.
Kirk is calling for the FTA to be ratified quickly as it would create more American jobs and expand the market for US products.
However‚ a potentially rough road lies ahead as some Republican lawmakers want the Korea deal to be considered along with Washington's pending FTAs with Panama and Colombia.
Responding to Kirk the House Ways and Means Committee Chairman David Camp said that all three agreements need to have a "specific path forward" by July 1st and expressed disappointment that the letter did not mention the other two deals.
Once submitted to Congress the Korea-US trade pact will go under the "fast track" process in which Congress must hold up-or-down votes on the agreement within a set timeframe.
Meanwhile‚ US beef exports to Korea spiked significantly during the first two months of this year due to concerns over the outbreak of foot and mouth disease in Korea.
The US Meat Export Federation says that as of February 17th around 20‚340 tons of US beef have been exported to Korea which is more than 80-percent increase from the same period last year.
