요약정보
Cows are a ruminating mammal that digest plant-based foods by initially softening it within its first stomach then regurgitating the semi-digested mass and chewing it again.
During this slow digestive process the food in the cow's stomach begins to ferment causing the animal to release methane gas through belching and flatulence.
Although this bodily function seems harmless‚ scientists say the amount of methane gas released by cows has an even more damaging effect on global warming than carbon dioxide.
According to experts‚ in the case of dairy cattle one milking cow can discharge roughly 2‚860 kilograms of carbon dioxide in a year which is close to a car's annual CO2 emission.
[Interview : Oh Young-gyoon‚ Animal Researcher
Rural Development Administration] "During digestion‚ methane gas naturally forms in the cow's stomach. The amount is not much‚ but because methane gas is more detrimental than CO2 when it comes to greenhouse effects we must find a way to reduce methane emissions."
In order to lower methane emissions‚ the Rural Development Administration has developed a new gauge to measure cows' methane discharge and has also teamed up with a stock feed research facility to produce environmentally-friendly feed that can help lower the animal's gas.
[Interview : Kim Soo-jin‚ CEO
CJ Cheiljedang] "We believe we can create a lot of synergy by cooperating with the Rural Development Administration since they have the manpower and superior testing and data analysis equipment."
Livestock experts say thanks to such dedicated research even if the number of cattle farms rise in the future methane gas emissions will stay low posing little threat to the environment.
