In his first sitdown with cabinet members President Lee Myung-bak ordered officials to find ways to ease the pinch on people's pocketbooks.
[Interview : President Lee Myung-bak] "If we work on it‚ we can curb the prices of commodities that directly affect people's everyday livelihood. Special measures are needed as it is important that ordinary citizens are least-influenced by the price increase in industrial products."
With the president at the helm the Cabinet council passed several resolutions Monday aimed at taming the country's inflation.
The government decided to lower taxes on oil by 10 percent and abolish the ceiling on corporate investment all by the end of the first half.
President Lee also called for the formation of a task force focused on stabilizing the livelihoods of the working class.
He is also demanding that agencies look into ways to curb price hikes in public services and utilities everything from bus and subway fares to electric bills.
The Office of the President has ordered ministries to hand in by mid-March detailed plans for jumpstarting the economy and among the anticipated policies are lowering expenses on education‚ phone and energy bills.
